High Resolution Infrared Sounder (HIRS)
The NOAA-provided HIRS/4 high resolution IR sounder instrument is flying aboard ESA's MetOp satellite. Measurements from HIRS are used to measure ocean surface temperature, total atmospheric ozone levels, precipitable water, cloud height, cloud coverage, and Earth's albedo. HIRS data is also used in conjunction with AMSU measurements to calculate vertical atmospheric temperature profiles and the pressure between Earth's surface and about 40km.
